There are essentially 2 types of trips:

Heritage Tours – which are supported by the IHS
Non-Heritage Tours – which are not supported by the IHS, because they involve water transport.

Both kinds of tours are organized by IHS members and these trips can be advertised in the E-News once they are approved by the board. Heritage Tours require members to do some research in preparation for the trip and to produce a small booklet for each group member and a copy for the library. Non-Heritage Tours are not required to make research booklets but they can if their leader decides to do so.

Trips are graded to help individuals decide whether they are suitable to participate in the tour. The level of fitness and physical exertion required as well as the amenities available are used as measuring tools to classify each trip. Tours consist of 5-10 people and generally last from 3-10 days. Every participant must be a member of IHS and at least 18 years of age.

It is important to note, the Heritage Society places importance on safety and keeping costs to a minimum. Each group participant must sign a Medical and Liability waiver before departure. Members must be honest with their own limitations. Equally important, is that people are adaptable and flexible to sudden changes and have a good sense of humor. People need to be tolerant with the level of services and amenities available as it may not be on par with that of their home countries.
