Congkak or Congklak Game
Congkak or Dakon
Inv. N° 23688
Wood Congkak also known as dakon is a game usually played by young girls and women. Two people compete on an oblong board with two rows of small holes on each side and a larger hole at each end. The smaller holes are called “home” and the larger ones, the “granary.”
The game represents a farmer’s activities. The small holes symbolize the paddyfield, and the big holes the granary. Dropping seeds into a hole mimics the action of a farmer planting rice, while the clockwise direction of the game represents the watering system. A farmer is expected to be diligent and clever, able t
o predict and take advantage
of a situation so that his/her granary will be full of rice.
Congkak or dakon was famous throughout Indonesia in the past, although boards of this type - with the crowned naga at both ends would only be owned by wealthy families.
